I write to find out what I have to say. I edit to find out how to say it right. ~ Cheryl Strayed, author

Have you been writing a novel? A memoir? A how-to book? Would you like to write an ebook to promote your business? Are you planning to submit your book to a publisher, or are you thinking of publishing it yourself?

You have worked very hard to get to this point, accomplishing what many writers dream about but don’t actually do. Now what? How can you get your book out into the world?

Some writers are fortunate to have their books published the old-fashioned way (by traditional publishers), but the odds against this kind of success are very high. Self-publishing is a popular option; in fact, many self-publishing authors have done very well. However, the competition to get your book out in front is fierce, and it can be a daunting process. For one thing, self-publishing can be very expensive. You have to pay for the services that traditional publishers provide: book design, editing, and marketing. Printing costs can be very high. (See Resources to learn more about self-publishing.)

If you are going to invest a lot of money in your book, the writing should be impeccable. Before you self-publish or submit your book to a traditional publisher, you should have a skilled, experienced editor review your manuscript to make sure that the writing is tight, concise, and clear. An editor will also correct typos, spelling mistakes, and errors in capitalization and punctuation.

Whether you are planning to publish a printed book, an ebook, or both, I can help if you —

  • are having trouble getting started or are stuck
  • are unsure about your writing or the presentation of your ideas
  • need a careful review to make sure that your book is tight and well organized
  • need a “once over” to check for typos and formatting problems, and to make sure there are no errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Some authors are concerned that they will lose control of their work if they hire an editor. Don’t worry. As your editor, I will never seek to alter your voice, and nothing will be taken away, changed, or added without your permission.

What I WILL do is suggest ways to make your book as excellent as it can be!
